Preventative Care & Wellness
Health & Wellness
Year-Round Preventative Care
Preventative care includes routine vaccinations, deworming, dental care, and regular wellness examinations to maintain the overall health of your horse.
Our veterinarians keep up to date with current research and recommendations, so the care your horse receives reflects best practice. A consistent wellness plan helps keep your horse healthy and performing well throughout the year, and allows problems to be found and treated early.
Dental Care
Regular dental care is vital for the health and performance of your horse. Every dental visit begins with a complete oral exam to find and address any abnormalities.
Our common procedures include routine dental examinations, along with “floating” and corrective work to ensure proper alignment. Routine and complex extractions, EOTRH surgery and treatment of sinus problems are a regular part of our day. Horizon Equine accepts referred cases for advanced dental surgery.
Dermatology
An itchy or irritated horse is not a happy horse. Skin problems in horses range from common irritations, parasites and tumors to more complex diseases. Everyday issues such as mild allergies, minor infections and wounds can usually be managed easily at home once your horse has had a veterinary exam and any diagnostics needed. Our veterinarians can guide you on routine skin care and provide surgery and advanced treatment for more complex cases, whether the goal is managing a chronic condition or preventing new ones.
Ophthalmology
Eye problems are very common in horses and range from chronic conditions needing long-term management to emergencies requiring acute care or potentially surgery. In our clinic, our veterinarians regularly diagnose and treat the most common field conditions, such as conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers and uveitis. Additionally, for more complex cases, we have the benefit of access to local, specialized, board-certified ophthalmologists who can be scheduled to come see your horse at our hospital.
End of Life Care
As horses age or face serious health problems, keeping them comfortable becomes the priority. This often means making difficult decisions about palliative care or euthanasia. Our veterinarians will talk with you openly about your horse’s quality of life and your options, so you can make the decision that is right for your horse.
Saying goodbye is the hardest part of what we do, and we know it is far harder for you. When the time comes, we are dedicated to making sure your horse’s passing is calm, peaceful and dignified, and we are here to support you through these difficult times.
Preventative Health Plans
Horizon Equine Health Plans make it easier to budget for your horse’s routine and annual health care. Regular preventive care also means issues are more likely to be found before they become serious or costly.
We offer three Health Plans: Miniature, Standard for most horses, and Geriatric for horses 15 and older. All three plans focus on prevention, because maintaining your horse’s health is better than treating problems after they develop.
Each plan includes two veterinary visits a year, with a full physical exam and time to discuss your horse’s health with your veterinarian at each one. Depending on the plan chosen, a broad list of services may be included, such as dental care, diagnostic blood work, vaccinations and call fees. Seeing your horse regularly lets us find and treat problems early, and gives you a clear picture of how your horse is doing.
Give our Care Coordinators a call to find out more or enroll your horse in a Health Plan.

FAQ
When can you purchase Health Plans?
When is the second appointment of the Plan scheduled?
Usually, the second veterinary visit is scheduled six months after the initial Plan visit to ensure that your horse receives their planned vaccines on schedule.
When should I schedule my veterinary visits for the Plan?
Contact our Care Coordinators to arrange veterinary visits at your convenience and tailored to your horse’s needs. Many owners find it convenient to schedule one visit in the spring and the second in the fall.
Is it possible to make substitutions?
Our Health Plans are non-refundable and non-transferable, and no substitutions or discounts can be made by omitting included items.
My horse is either unvaccinated or overdue.
Horses without a routine vaccination history can still enroll in the Health Plan. There is an additional cost for any booster vaccines and applicable call fee, scheduled 4 weeks after the initial visit.
My horse has recently received vaccines or dental work.
No worries. The Health Plan procedures can be scheduled for the second visit. Our equine veterinarian will provide all the necessary details during the initial visit.
I have some questions about the vaccines.
Our Health Plan covers the following AAEP recommended “CORE” vaccines, which are recommended for our region:
- Influenza & Rhinopneumonitis
- Tetanus
- West Nile Virus
- Eastern & Western Equine Encephalitis
- Rabies
Additionally, we’ve included a booster for Influenza & Rhinopneumonitis at 6 months.
Do geriatric horses require two dental procedures?
For our older patients, we’ve included a second comprehensive dental examination, performed under safe sedation, and a second dental float (only if necessary). Conducting a sedated examination enables us to conduct a thorough assessment of the health of all their teeth. As horses age, this aspect becomes increasingly important. It’s important to note that not every senior horse requires dental corrections every six months, but if your horse does, we have it covered for you. Our veterinarian will discuss the specific needs during the examination at the visit.
